ORC - Week 3

It’s week 3 of the One Room Challenge and thankfully progress has been made! So last week we decided on a paint color, Frambroise by Sherwin Williams. This week I got my cushions back from the upholsterer and I got my grandmother’s 1960s chrome dining get back from the auto body shop. Let’s see a before:

This is a photo from 1st dibs but this is the amount of rust that was on the chairs.

These chairs have been in my grandmother’s house since the 1960s. I remember her having the cushions recovered when I was probably in junior high school but that haven’t be touched since. My uncle keep them after she died but he didn’t take good care of them. They were in horrible condition and my upholsterer said some of cushions just disintegrated when she removed the old fabric. Looking at the chairs I knew they were going to be a lot of manual labor that I didn’t have time to do, so my husband asked his friend at a local auto body shop. He never worked on furniture before but I figured cars get rusty and he must have some kind of solution to help get the rust off. He tried different solutions on the chrome but ended up spraying them with an acid. He did it several times over several weeks. The rust is gone, so all I have to do now is buff them with extra fine steel wool.

This is the one I used. It’s perfect for metals.

In my ORC Highlights you can see a video of what the chairs look like before and after the buffing. It’s like night and day. One chair is done, I have 3 more and a table to do.

Also this week the moldings went up and I absolutely love them!

What this photo doesn’t show is that we had to run to 6 Lowes stores for molding - 3 in Charlotte and 3 in Raleigh. Theie inventory counting was wrong at all of them. This pushed the project from 1 day to 2 days. Eric from Est.2019 Workshop had the patience of a saint and a great attitude! I do think we bought the last of the stock of these moldings in North Carolina.

Painting will be delayed a week but the room is coming together beautifully and progress is being made. I am looking forward to Week 4 and seeing Framboise on the wall with all this yummy molding.
