ORC Week 5: Kitchen Update

It is week 5 and it’s time to paint the kitchen cabinets! This is the moment I’ve waiting 14 years and I have butterflies in my stomach with anticipation. The first few days were filled with cleaning the cabinets and then taping them before spraying. Consider these the last photos you will see until the final reveal. You gotta have something to look forward to, right?

So far I’ve talked about the big plans for the kitchen and dining spaces like painting, lighting and furniture but not about the details. It’s the details that bring the design to life. I partnered with One Room Challenge sponsor Spoonflower for a custom tablecloth and napkins for the kitchen and dining room. Why a tablecloth? Well, I like to host dinner not just for the holidays but also for my friends. It’s nice to be able to switch up the look of the dining room by adding a tablecloth. Spoonflower has a wide selection of custom fabric options, so I knew I could find something fun! I decided to mix the Storks on linen with the Humble Bee Honey Bee Floral Flowers for a layered custom look. This makes the place settings more interesting without being matchy.

As far as styling the kitchen and dining rooms, that is more of a feeling for me. I have to be in the space to see how all the elements are playing together. It’s hard to put to paper but I know it’s right when I see it. I want the kitchen to feel warm and collected so I will be bring in cookbooks and art and other items to give it a layered feel. It’s a kitchen so I don’t want it to be overcrowded with too much so there is a fine balance. I am certainly looking forward to using a bowl from ORC sponsor Jill Rosenwald. This isn’t the pattern I selected but it’s the color story - Jet Black.

For the family room update, I just received our Gold Foil Lamps Shades from ORC sponsor Couture Lamps! They perfectly tie in all the brass elements in the kitchen and dining room. They also mimic our brass coffee table.
