Bwa (Burkina Faso, West Africa) Nwantantay plank mask, late 20th to 21st century
Carved wood and pigment. In the Bwa language the Nwantantay is a mask which represents a flying spirit. The mask is used in ceremonies celebrating the dead, changing of seasons, and various other occasions that require communing with the spirit world.
